Design audit: how to evaluate user interface design

If you want to know that your website/app is good, you need to have a clear metric to measure the quality and that’s not as simple as you may think.

Everyone’s talking about good user interface without being able to support that statement and they’re basing it solely on their aesthetic appeal. The truth is that if you want to know that your website/app is good, you need to have a clear metric to measure the quality and that’s not as simple as you may think.

As you already know, looks aren't everything and there should be more to a website/app than meets the eye. A nice looking site/app doesn’t have to be more successful than its less appealing competitor. Ideally, a good and successful interface should have a clear purpose, should be user-friendly so that each user can navigate it easily, be pleasing to the eye, provide the right and much-needed information to the user.

If you keep these things in mind, you will be able to measure your interface quality.

  1. Purpose
Don’t squander your greatest online asset by not determining its purpose. Whether you are an e-commerce, a service-based site or an entertainment website, you need to show your visitors in a very clear way what it is that you offer.
  2. Navigation and user flows
There’s no point in having a creative and exciting website or an app if the visitor cannot navigate their way around and find what they need. If you follow “don’t make me think” advice by Steve Krug, BCI, and Usability engineer, you need to make it simple enough for them to like it and come back for more.
  3. Style/ Visuals
Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and I totally agree but it doesn’t mean that there are no aesthetic principles designers use when they design a website/app. The color, the graphic, the layout and much more - all these need to be taken into consideration when talking about the visual style of a good user interface.
  4. Content
Last but by all means not least, the content needs to be meaningful, otherwise, your bounce rate will be pretty high. Readability and the usefulness of the material posted on the site are of paramount importance as you have a message to convey.

Ponder on these things and make your user interface more effective.
